Community Involvement

PSC is very involved in our local communities, especially when it involves the youth of our area.

4-H
PSC has a long-standing tradition of helping our young people. The 4-H program is one in which participants become contributing, productive, self-directed members of a forward-moving society. Over the past three decades PSC has been an annual supporter of the Dubois, Perry & Spencer County 4-H Fairs. PSC is a 4-H Fair sponsor in all three counties.

Technology Scholarship Program
A technology scholarship to Lincoln Trail College of $500 per semester is available each year to a graduating senior of Perry Central, Heritage Hills, Forest Park or Southridge High Schools. To qualify, a student must meet the following criteria:

Must have had a 2.75 GPA or higher during their high school year
Must be recommended by the school’s administration
Must have a parent or guardian who is a cooperative member

The student must maintain a 3.0 GPA or higher each semester at Lincoln Trail to receive the $500 per semester scholarship. During the first summer, the cooperative will hire the student to work with Outside Plant craft employees. This allows the student to experience first hand the type of work (or similar work) he/she may experience in a telecommunications career. It also allows the student and cooperative a chance to evaluate each other for possible employment opportunities.

Directory Recycling Program
In March of 1995, PSC partnered with area schools and the Solid Waste Management Districts in the three counties to begin a directory recycling program. To date almost 142,000 of the PERRY SPENCER DUBOIS REGIONAL DIRECTORIES have been collected to be recycled into useful building products. PSC has paid over $40,000 to those schools that have participated in the recycling drives.

Additional School and Youth Involvement

Beginning in April, 1996, and each year since, the Cooperative Board of Directors has given Perry Central, Heritage Hills and Southridge High Schools each $1000 to use as the administration sees fit. These dollars are typically used for scholarships.
In 2008, Forest Park High School was also given a donation used for scholarships.
The Cooperative has provided financial support to many area youth programs such as Little League, Wrestling and school sports programs
Since 1997, the Cooperative has sponsored one student each year from the co-op area to attend the Foundation for Rural Services Youth Tour in Washington, DC.
PSC makes presentations annually at area elementary schools. These presentations explain phone etiquette, proper 911 use, Internet Safety and more to those in grades 2 & 5.

PSC Recycles

PSC made the jump to participate in business recycling through the Spencer County Solid Waste Management District. Almost all office paper, newspapers, magazines, cardboard, etc. are now recycled. The photo shows several employees with their new “mini-trashcans” that all employees now have in their offices. This shows how little needs to be actually thrown away rather than recycled.
