E-Mail Scam - New Phishing Attack
Reported On Banking Customers![]()
E-mail con artists
have frequently masqueraded as banks in an effort to collect personal
information such as account numbers. One of the latest such scams, first
reported last month, takes a slightly different approach. These e-mail messages
are being sent to customers of Bank of America and various other financial
institutions, but claim to be promoting a new security program called SFN (Stop
Fraud Now). That's right - they're committing fraud by pretending to be
an organization that fights fraud.
The bogus SFN program offers
to provide you with protection against cloning of credit cards and asks
recipients to register by supplying their Social Security Number, credit card
number, and ATM Personal Identification Number (PIN). Keep your eyes out for an
e-mail resembling this one:
Remember, you should always be
suspicious of an e-mail requesting personal financial information, even if it
appears to be from a financial institution with which you have a relationship.
Legitimate banks will never send you an e-mail asking you to disclose your
credit card number or online banking password. Do not reply to this type of
e-mail or click on any link included in the message. Just hit "Delete."

MySpace.com – How To Block It - Setting Internet
Explorer's Content Advisor to Block MySpace.com![]()
Internet Explorer's
Content Advisor can be configured to block only specific
websites:
1. To open Content Advisor, click on Start, then on
Control Panel.
2. Double-click the Internet Options icon (You may need
to open "Network & Internet Connections" if you are in Category view).
3. At the top of the Internet Options window, click the Content tab.
4. In the Content Advisor section click on the Settings button, (or if
Settings is not available, on the Enable button).
5. Select each of the
following tabs and check or uncheck the options noted.
Ratings
tab
Select a category to view the rating levels:
Select a level for each of the viewing categories: (0 is strongest,
4 is weakest)
(If you are only blocking for a specific website, set
all categories to 4)
Click APPLY
Approved Sites tab
Enter the
address of the site in the "Allow this Web site:" window, for
example:
http://www.myspace.com
If you want to ALLOW
access to this site, click the ALWAYS button.
If you want to BLOCK access to
this site, click the NEVER button
As a precaution, you may want to enter
variations of the address, such
as:
myspace.com
www.myspace.com
When finished, click
APPLY
General Tab
User
Options:
"Users can see sites that have no rating" - Check this
option if you don't want sites that don't use ratings to be blocked (Note:
Most sites don't use ratings, so most sites will be blocked. Checking this
option will not prevent blocking of sites in your Approved Sites
list).
"Supervisor can type a password to allow users to view
restricted content" - If this option is checked, you will have the option of
entering the Content Advisor password to allow access to a site being
blocked.
Supervisor password:
Enter a password
for Content Advisor, then retype it to confirm. Type a hint to remind you
of the password, but won't give it away, since others will see this "hint" when
pages are blocked.
6. Once you have completed your settings, click
Apply, then OK.
7. Click OK to close Internet
Options.
When pages are blocked, you will see a message
from Content Advisor that it will not allow you to see this site. If you
chose the option to Allow access with the Supervisor's Password, you will see
the "hint" for the password and a field to type it in. If you want to
allow access, enter the password and click OK.
If you want to
disable Content Advisor, at the top of Internet Explorer click on Tools, then
Internet Options. Click on the Content tab and click on the Disable
button. It will prompt you for the Supervisor's password. Content
Advisor will be disabled until your Enable it again.
Note that
Content Advisor will ONLY work with Internet Explorer. If another web
browser is installed on the computer, such as Firefox or Netscape, those web
browsers will have access to the sites.
Ask The Help Desk - What Is A
Buffer?
Question: I've heard someone mention a "buffer" when
referring to listening to music online. What is a
buffer?
Answer: When you download an audio or video file from
the Internet, your media player software, such as Windows Media Player, saves
portions of the file in temporary memory during the process. This is called
buffering.
The media player uses buffering technology to begin playing
the clip before the entire file is downloaded. This means the clip will be
played much sooner than if the entire file had to be completely downloaded
before playback.
A buffer is also used to speed up a computer's
performance by holding information in temporary memory (random-access memory
[RAM]) until it's committed to a permanent location or task.
When you
use a word processor, for example, your changes are held in temporary buffer
memory until you save the document to your hard drive. Buffers also are used to
transmit data between hardware devices, such as a computer and a printer. This
buffer is needed when one device can transmit data much quicker than another can
receive it.

growing. As of July 2006, total worldwide market share for Firefox is 12.93
