E-Mail Virus - Klez Worm Has More Tricks Up Its Sleeve

The "W32/Klez.h@MM Worm" continues to be the fastest spreading e-mail worm currently circulating across the World Wide Web. This worm spreads when unsuspecting e-mail recipients open e-mail attachments they believe their friends have sent to them. The worm then goes to the recipient's Outlook Express or ICQ address book, grabs a file located on the recipient's computer (possibly a confidential one) and randomly e-mails this file along with a copy of the worm (so it actually sends two attachments with each e-mail) to people listed in the address book. The worm also disguises the actual source of the e-mail by randomly selecting e-mail addresses from the address book to be shown as the "sender" of the e-mail. So, if a person receives this e-mail worm from a friend or relative, chances are the person it shows being sent from is probably not the person who actually sent it.

In addition, the subject line and the content of the e-mail worm's message randomly changes...making it harder to detect.

A common, tricky text message used by the W32/Klez.h@MM Worm attempts to disguise itself as a "Klez Immunity Tool." The message tells the e-mail recipient to run a "tool" which will prevent the Klez worm from attacking the recipient's computer. This is a FALSE, BOGUS E-MAIL. In fact, when the recipient opens the accompanying attachment, it actually releases the worm onto his/her computer...rather than providing immunity. The text of the bogus "Klez Immunity Tool" message may look something like this:

  Subject Line: FW: Worm Klez.E immunity

Message: Klez is the most common world-wide spreading worm.It's very dangerous by corrupting your files. Because of its very smart stealth and anti-anti-virus technic,most common AV software can't detect or clean it. We developed this free immunity tool to defeat the malicious virus. You only need to run this tool once, and then Klez will never come into your PC.

NOTE: Because this tool acts as a fake Klez to fool the real worm,some AV monitor maybe cry when you run it.

If so,Ignore the warning,and select 'continue'.

If you have any question,please mail to me .

If you receive an e-mail similar to this, simply DELETE IT. DO NOT open the attachments accompanying this e-mail message.

Remember not to open an attachment, even from friends and relatives, unless you've first verified that they sent it to you. We also encourage our Internet customers to utilize anti-virus scanning software and to download updates frequently to lessen the possibility of computers being infected by e-mail viruses. As always, simply using caution and some common sense when opening e-mail attachments can be the best recourse in preventing the spread of e-mail worms and viruses.

Question: I tried to access a website but received a "401 - Unauthorized" error message. What does this mean?

Answer: This means that the site is password protected and you did not provide a correct password or username to access the website. If you have previously registered at this website, type in your password again as you simply may have keyed it incorrectly. If the problem continues, e-mail the site's webmaster for assistance.

Short Tutorial - Try This If Web Pages Won't "Refresh"

Have you been to a web page that simply won't refresh/reload with updated information? The site has content that changes frequently, i.e. stock market, the weather, news, etc., but the information is not updated when you later return to the web page's URL (web address).

Here's a trick you can try next time this happens to you: When typing the site's URL, add a question mark (?) to the end of the web address. Your web browser will think it's a new web page and will "refresh" it for you. The question mark will not affect the way the page is displayed. If you need to keep "refreshing" on subsequent visits to the web page to obtain current information, simply add letters behind the question mark, (i.e. ?wqr) and the page will be downloaded with the updated data.

Why does this work? Your browser only downloads information in front of a question mark. However, since the whole URL changes (by adding the question mark and possibly other letters behind the question mark), the browser provides a complete "refresh" of the web page.
