How do I change my e-mail address?

Since your e-mail address is linked with your PSC username, changing the username on your account will also change your e-mail address.

If you don't wish to change your PSC username, you can add an additional e-mail address to your account and stop using your old address.

Can I have a different e-mail address that my PSC username?

Your PSC username is linked to your PSC e-mail address, so they are the same. You can purchase additional e-mail addresses, or if you have Enhanced or Broadband Internet, you have two additional e-mail addresses you can set up and use. Call your PSC Customer Service Representative (1-800-511-4899) during normal business hours to set up your accounts or order an new e-mail account.

I purchased a new computer and set up my e-mail account. Where are my old e-mail messages?

If you're using an e-mail program such as Outlook Express, your messages where downloaded to your computer. Those messages are still on your old computer in your mail program. To move them to your new computer, follow the instruction is the Microsoft KnowledgeBase article How to back up and recover Outlook Express Data, but instead of saving the information to your Desktop, save the files to a CD.

You can also use the Windows XP Files and Settings Transfer Wizard to move files and settings from your old computer to a new one. See this article at Microsoft.com, Moving Files and Settings to a New PC.

How do I check my e-mail when I'm away from my computer?

You can use PSC's Online Mail to check new messages when you're away from your computer. All you need is a computer with a connection to the Internet. Go to the PSC Home Page (www.psci.net) and click on Online Mail. For more information on using Online Mail, see How to use PSC Online Mail.

Can Outlook Express check more than one e-mail address?

You can add additional e-mail addresses to Outlook Express by setting up each address as you did your first one. See "Setup: E-Mail: Outlook Express" for instructions on setting up your e-mail account.

Note that when you set up multiple e-mail addresses in Outlook Express, all the e-mail will mix in the Inbox folder, and replies to messages will always show as coming from your default e-mail address (one address is always set as the default address for sending messages). You can set up Outlook Express to keep e-mail from different addresses separated by setting up a separate Identity for each e-mail address. See How to set up multiple users or multiple accounts with Outlook Express

Can more than one person use Outlook Express?

Yes. If you are only using one User Account in Windows XP, you can set up separate Identities in Outlook Express for each person's e-mail address. Or you can set up separate User Accounts in Windows XP, which sets up separate instances of Outlook Express for each user.

To set up separate Identities, see How to set up multiple users or multiple accounts with Outlook Express. To set up separate User Accounts in Windows XP, see the Microsoft.com article To add a new user to the computer.

Can I password protect Outlook Express so that others using my computer can't see my e-mail?

Yes. You can add a password to your Identity in Outlook Express:
1. In Outlook Express, click on File, go to Identities, click on Manage Identities.
2. If you only have a single Identity set up in Outlook Express, it will be listed as Main Identity; otherwise, select your Identity from the list, then click Properties.
3. Check the option "Require a password"
4. In the Enter Password window, type the password you want to use (this doesn't have to be the same password you use on your PSC e-mail account). Retype the password in the Confirm New Password window, then click OK.
5. Click OK on the Properties window. Click Close on the Manage Identities window.

When you open Outlook Express or change to your Identity, it will request a password before it will open in that Identity.

What's the difference between Outlook Express and Microsoft Office Outlook?

Basically, Outlook Express is a simple mail program that is included with Windows Me and XP. Microsoft Office Outlook is a full-featured messaging and collaboration program that is included in most versions of the Microsoft Office.

For a more detailed comparison of Outlook Express and Microsoft Office Outlook, see the Microsoft KnowledgeBase article Differences between Outlook and Outlook Express.

Can I use any other e-mail program to access my PSC e-mail account?

Yes, you can use any e-mail program that can access a POP3 mail server and send using an SMTP mail server. Programs such as Mozillia Thunderbird, Eudora, and Incredimail will all work with PSC's mail server.

When setting up your account in these programs, you may need the following information:

Retrieving mail:
Your incoming mail server is a POP3 server.
Your incoming mail server name is mail.psci.net
Your incoming mail server DOES require you to log on (you'll need the username and password for your e-mail account).
Your incoming mail server DOES NOT require SSL (Secure Sockets Layer)

Sending mail:
Your outgoing mail server is an SMTP server.
Your outgoing mail server name is mail.psci.net
Your outgoing mail server DOES NOT require you to log on.
Your outgoing mail server DOES NOT require SPA (Secure Password Authentication)
Your outgoing mail server DOES NOT require SSL (Secure Sockets Layer)

Why does Outlook Express disconnect when I send/receive messages?

There is a setting in Outlook Express that tells it to disconnect after it has sent or checked for new messages. To change this setting:
  1. Click on Tools, then on Options.
  2. Click on the Connection tab.
  3. Uncheck the option "Hang up after sending/receiving messages".
  4. Click on the APPLY button, then click OK.

Why does Outlook Express block access to attachments I receive?

By default, Outlook Express will block any attachments that could potentially contain a virus. Unfortunately, Outlook Express considers almost any attachment a potential virus.

To allow access to all attachments, change this setting:

  1. In Outlook Express, click on Tools, then on Options.
  2. Click on the Security tab.
  3. In the Virus Protection section of this page, uncheck the option "Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus."
  4. At the bottom of the window, click APPLY, then OK.
Note: If you do not have an active, up-to-date virus protection program on your computer, you should not uncheck this option.

Why does Outlook Express keep asking for my password?

1. You may be using the wrong password for accessing your email.

2. Your virus protection program may be keeping your email program from reaching the mail server and validating your password. Try shutting down your computer and restarting it, then access your mail again.

3. Your mail account may be locked. This happens when there is a problem downloading your messages (such as too large a message, a damaged message, or if you are disconnected while downloading messages). When you cancel the logon window, you will see an error message that mentions "poplock busy".

When I try to open some attachments in Online Mail, why do I get an error message that it can't open the attachment?

Some types of attachments can't be opened through your web browser and can cause error messages when attempted. If you get an error message, you can try downloading the attachment to your computer and open the file from there:
1. At the bottom of the message, right-click on the "Download" link, and left-click on "Save target as".
2. Browse to a folder where you want to save the file, or save it to your Desktop. Click Save.
3. Once the file has downloaded, go to the folder or your Desktop and double-click on the downloaded file. It should start the appropriate program for the file type and open the file.

If you do not have a program installed on your computer that is able to open the attchment file type (a program "associated" with the attachment file type), you will be prompted to locate the program through the web or to select another program on your computer that may be capable of opening the file.
