WinPoET Connections Checklist


Windows 2000/Me/98SE/98 requires software that will allow a PPPoE connection. PSC provides free WinPoETs for these connections. The CD will be provided during your DSL/Wireless installation. If you find later that you need WinPoETs, you can pick up a free CD from the PSC office, or a CD can be mailed to you for a $5.00 mailing charge.


1. Have you installed the WinPoET software?
  • If yes, continue to Step 2.
  • If no, go to Setup: Broadband and select your Operating System.
  • If you're not sure:
    Do you have a WinPoET icon your your Desktop?
    Do you have a WinPoET icon in your System Tray?
    Do you have WinPoet listed in your Add/Remove Programs (Control Panel)?
    If not, go to Setup: Broadband and select your Operating System.
  • 2. Do you get an error message when you open Internet Explorer?
  • If you get a Connection Window, go to Step 4.
  • If you see a "Page not found" or "Cannot connect to server" message, go to Step 3
  • If you see a window asking if you want to Retry or Work Offline, or get a message that no connection to the Internet is currently available, go to Step 3.
  • If you see a window asking if you want to Connect or Work offline, click the Connect button. If you get the Connection window, go to Step 4. If you do not see a Connect window, go to Step 3
  • 3. Is Internet Explorer set to dial a connection?
    1. At the top of Internet Explorer, click on Tools, then on Internet Options.
    2. Click on the Connections tab.
    3. Verify that a connection named "WinPoET" is listed in the "Dial-up Network Settings" window.
    4. Verify that the option "Always dial my default connection" is selected.
    5. Verify that "(default)" is listed after your WinPoET connection. If not, click the connection name to highlight, then click the Set Default button.
    6. Click Apply (if available), then click OK.
    7. At the top of the Internet Explorer window, click the Refresh button, or press the F5 key on your keyboard.
  • If prompted to Connect or Work Offline, click the Connect button.
  • If a Connection window opens, go on to Step 4.
  • If a Connection window does not open, contact PSC Technical Support for further assistance.
  • 4. Do you get an error message when you try to make a connection?

    Click on the Connect button. Watch carefully for any error messages:

    Error 691: Invalid username and/or password. See Troubleshooting: Invalid Username and/or Password

    Error 678: The computer you are dialing is not answering.

  • The connection is damaged. Delete the connection and create a new one.
    1. At the top of the Internet Explorer window, click on Tools, then on Internet Options.
    2. Click on the Connections tab.
    3. Find the WinPoET connection in the list of connections. Click on the connection to highlight, then click on Remove to delete it. Click YES to delete.
    4. Close the Internet Properties window.
    5. Close Internet Explorer.
    6. On the Desktop, double-click the WinPoET icon (this will create a new WinPoET icon in Dial-up Networking).
    7. Enter your PSC username and password.
    8. Click Connect.
    9. If you get the same error message, uninstall WinPoET and reinstall.

    To uninstall WinPoET:
    1. Click on Start, go to Settings, click on Control Panel
    2. Click on Add/Remove Programs.
    3. In the list of installed programs Find WinPoET.
    4. Click the program name to highlight, then click the Install/Uninstall button.
    5. Restart your computer.
    6. Go to Setup: Broadband and select your Operating System to reinstall.
