Recipients are rejected by the mail server

Error message: "The message could not be sent because one of the recipients was rejected by the server. The rejected e-mail address was '[e-mail address]'.

This message means that the email address you were sending to (most likely an @psci.net address) no long exists, or that the domain name of the address (the @domain_name.com) doesn't exist. The account may have been closed or the user changed their e-mail address, or you may have mis-typed the address. Verify that you have the correct e-mail address.

If here is an error in the address, you can go to the Outbox, open the message and correct the e-mail address.

You may also want to verify that you have saved the correct e-mail address in your address book.

If you are replying to an e-mail message, you may want to let the recipient know of the error so they can correct the settings on their mail program.

Message is blocked due to spam

If you get an error message that your message was being blocked due to spam, this is a function of the PSC mail server.

Many large ISPs (like AOL) will block e-mail from any other ISP whom they have receive multiple spam messages. Getting blocks removed can be very time consuming, and users are denied sending e-mail to that ISP until the block is removed.

In an effort to halt spam from being sent from the PSC mail servers by Trojans, spambots, etc., the mail server tracks the number of messages sent by a user's account in a 5-minute period. If that number exceeds 100 messages (including messages sent to multiple recipients), the server will put a temporary block on that account from sending messages.

The only way to have this block removed is to contact PSC Technical Support. If you have not been sending out large amounts of e-mail, they will suggest that you scan your computer for viruses that may be sending virus e-mails or spam.

Outlook Express needs to reconnect to the Internet, or disconnects after sending or receiving mail

When you send or receive messages, Outlook Express opens a connection window each time to connect to the Internet, and disconnects when finished. This is caused by a setting in Outlook Express:
1. Click on Tools, then on Options.
2. Click on the Connection tab.
3. Uncheck the option "Hang up when finished sending or receiving"
4. Click Apply, then OK.

"Mail Delivery Subsystem" or "Mail Daemon" message: Cannot Relay

This message usually occurs when you are connected to another ISP, but are using mail.psci.net as your Outgoing (SMTP) server. PSC's mail server will not deliver messages sent from foreign (non-PSC) IP addresses.

To correct this problem, change the Outgoing (SMTP) mail server name in your account settings to the Outgoing mail server of the ISP you are using for your connection to the Internet. You will need to contact that ISP's technical support for this information.

"Mail Delivery Subsystem" or "Mail Daemon" message: User unknown

This message occurs when an ISP's mail server receives a message for a user in their domain that doesn't exist. For example, for the address, jsmith@aol.com, the AOL mail server would receive this message, but could not deliver it because there is no user named jsmith on AOL.

Verify that the e-mail address you are sending to is valid and spelled correctly. One common mistake is using .com for .net or .edu in an e-mail address.

"Mail Delivery Subsystem" or "Mail Daemon" message: Message has not been sent for 4 hours

This message is a warning that a message you sent is still waiting on the PSC mail server after more than 4 hours of attempts to deliver it to the recipient's mail server.

You do not need to do anything about this message; it is merely alerting you that there is a delay on the recipient's mail server that is keeping the PSC mail server from passing on the message. If the message has not been delivered in 2 days, you will receive another message that your message was not delivered and suffered "permanent, fatal errors"; which only means that it was deleted without delivery.

"Mail Delivery Subsystem" or "Mail Daemon" message: Message had permanent, fatal errors

This message is notifying you that a message you sent was unable to be delivered, and was deleted from the mail server. In most cases, this is after 2 days of attempted delivery by PSC's mail server.
